How It All Began

For years and years, I have had to drown out the chattering noise of my friends and acquaintances about Gossip Girl, and each time I irritably rolled my eyes and scoffed at the talk of what I had thought was the dumbest, shallowest show ever! Every time my best friend tried to make me watch Gossip Girl at her house, every time it came on as my cousins were watching in their living room, I refused. Even as Netflix began to spread like wildfire and suddenly all seasons of Gossip Girl was available to stream and everyone began the craze all over again, I squirmed and kicked, metaphorically of course. Little did I know, I would soon be sucked into the  lavish word that is the Upper East Side.

It was not until I got to college and met my adorable roommate Brianna that I even gave Gossip Girl a chance. I thought to myself, maybe I can ironically watch Gossip Girl and laugh at everything they do, like Cady Heron did in Mean Girls. However, that took a turn as soon as I  saw him, a brooding man with an amazing jaw structure, Chuck Bass. It’s safe to say that from that moment on, I was hooked.

Just as I thought I couldn’t get any more hooked, in came Blair Waldorf. She was the most classy, conniving, elegant woman I’ve ever seen, and Chuck’s counterpart. With these two I have experienced a parasocial relationship like no other. Well, it was more like a parasocial love triangle, myself being the third leg.

I walked into this show on Season 3 Episode 1 "Reversals of Fortune", and what a magical episode it was. It was the first time I’d seen Chuck and Blair together. Apparently, their relationship status was complicated in the two seasons prior, and this episode marked the official relationship status of the couple. I got to see into the twisted, pervy inner workings of Chuck and Blair. In this episode, Chuck is seen flirting with a blonde girl in a bar. The audience is under the impression that they are going to hook up, until Blaire busts in and scolds Chuck and publicly shames the girl in question. Just as we’re about to assume it’s over, Chuck and Blaire start making out and we learn that this is a sort of a game of theirs. It’s dirty, dishonest and so bad in all the good ways. I guess when you have all the money and luxuries in the world, you need to find other ways to keep things interesting.

Anyways, it’s safe to say this started my obsession.
